Recycling Centre reuse

Find information on what reuse opportunities are available across West Sussex Recycling Centres.

We are dedicated to prioritising reuse as much as we can. This means reusing items, for their original purpose or a new purpose, gives them a new lease of life, saves money and reduces waste.

Across our Recycling Centres we offer:

  • reuse shop - purchase and donate preloved items
  • paint reuse - donate and/or collect unwanted paint
  • community and care equipment

Reuse shop

We operate a reuse shop at Billingshurst Recycling Centre as part of our dedication to reducing waste and encouraging reuse where possible.

The reuse shop provides residents with an opportunity to purchase and donate preloved items.

Not all items are suitable for donating to reuse, so it's always best to check with a member of staff. For example, the shop staff cannot repair or clean items, so anything donated needs to be in good working order.

The shop is able to accept:

  • bags and handbags
  • baskets and boxes
  • bikes, scooters and skateboards
  • board games and puzzles
  • books
  • candles and tea light holders
  • children's toys
  • computer games
  • crockery (for example, plates, bowls, mugs, glasses and teapots)
  • DVD’s, CDs and records
  • garden statues (bird baths)
  • hanging baskets
  • internal and external furniture (for example, chairs, tables and desks)
  • mirrors
  • musical instruments
  • plant pots
  • pots and pans
  • silverware
  • sports equipment (for example, gold clubs, balls and rackets)
  • suitcases
  • tools and toolboxes
  • vases

To visit the Billingshurst reuse shop you must book an appointment, as you will need to enter the site for access.

The Billingshurst reuse shop is card only and cannot accept cash transactions.

Paint reuse

We have joined forces with Community RePaint (sponsored by Dulux) to offer opportunities for donating and/or collecting unwanted paint, to reduce waste and redistribute it.

The following Recycling Centres offer paint reuse:

  • Burgess Hill
  • Crawley
  • Horsham
  • Littlehampton
  • Shoreham
  • Westhampnett

Residents can donate paint for reuse as long as it is in good condition (for example, it has not dried up) and the paint container at the site has capacity to accept it.

Types of paint to donate

We accept:

  • emulsion
  • gloss and tile paint
  • eggshell
  • undercoat
  • primer
  • masonry paint
  • floor paint
  • exterior paint
  • varnishes and wood stains
  • satin paint

We don't accept:

  • paint stripper and thinner
  • paint brush cleaners
  • wood preservatives and treatments
  • car paint
  • aerosol/spray paint
  • specialist and industrial paint
  • cellulose based paint

Displays of the following hazard symbols will not be accepted:

  • hazardous to health
  • flammable
Hazardous and flammable symbols

Residents are also allowed to take up to 3 tins of paint, for free, from the reuse station, as long as it is declared on the document provided in the paint container. This limit is in place to ensure fair distribution to all residents.

To donate or collect any paint you must book an appointment as you will need to enter the site for access.

The Recycling Centres are unable to accept paint donations from businesses. If you are a trader, retailer, manufacturer or other business with leftover paint, you can find out how you can donate your leftover paint for reuse through the Community RePaint network.
