From recycling takeaway containers during Euro 2024 and fruit punnets during Wimbledon, to reducing food waste while watching the Olympics, we'll be sharing our tips with you all summer long on how to reduce waste and recycle more effectively both at home and whilst out and about.

Follow @WSRecycles on social media for the latest updates and tips:

Together, we can become recycling winners this summer! Find out more on our Summer of sport page.

Plastic free July

This Plastic Free July we’ve asked our team to share their top tips on how to reduce plastic waste at home. We’ve put together an easy room-by-room guide on sustainable swaps that help us keep plastic waste to a minimum. From ditching the soap dispenser and switching to a soap bar, to swapping out clingfilm for reusable Tupperware instead.

If you do use plastic, remember to recycle what you can at home or via your local Recycling Centre.

Many supermarkets also now have collection points for plastic bags and wrapping. Find your nearest participating supermarket on Recycle now.

Fight food waste with our new video series

As part of our collaboration with UKHarvest to reduce food waste across homes in West Sussex, we've launched a series of short videos to help residents learn about preparing, storing, and cooking Britain's top wasted food.

The "Veg While You Wait" video series will be available at our Community Food Hubs in the coming months. You can also view the full series on our website.

Additionally, the engaging "Fight Against Food Waste" booklet, is available for free download on the UKHarvest website. The booklet offers practical tips on smarter shopping, freezing, using up leftovers and shares some easy and delicious recipes for you to try at home. Why not give them a go and help us to reduce food waste across the county today.

Thank you for participating in our survey

Thank you to all the residents that took part in our recent survey. Your feedback is invaluable and will help us in shaping future communications campaigns.

From last month's survey, we've learned that 61% of respondents said they want to know more about what can and can't be recycled at home. Well we're here to help! West Sussex residents can recycle a set of core materials at home, including:

  • plastic bottles (tops on)
  • glass bottles and jars
  • paper and card
  • metal cans, tins and aerosols
  • cartons

Kerbside recycling is taken to the Ford Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) for processing. Remember, all items for recycling should be:

  • clean - free from food and drink leftovers
  • dry - keep your recycling bin lid shut
  • loose - no plastic bags

For more information on what can be recycled at home and to download our yes or no fridge flyer, visit our Preparing your household recycling page.

Upcoming waste prevention events

Throughout West Sussex, we're proud to be working alongside a team of passionate recycling and waste prevention volunteers. They attend public and private events to promote waste prevention, reuse and recycling, and are keen to answer questions on the county's recycling provision and waste prevention.

Alongside the below public events, we are attending numerous privately hosted talks and events for local community groups, schools and other organisations.

If you would like our team to provide a talk, visit your school, attend an event, or for more information on the above email waste.prevention@westsussex.gov.uk.
