Even part time makes a difference!

If you have young children in nappies and are looking for ways to reduce your waste, why not give reusables a go?

Reusable nappies often have a bad reputation, and we understand that parents are sometimes too busy to give up disposables entirely. That’s why we’re encouraging those who can, to try them whenever possible. Even switching to reusables part-time can make a massive difference - the equivalent of saving at least 17 plastic bags per day!

But there are plenty of other reasons to consider reusable nappies, too. We’ve compiled the top reasons and best tips for using them, all in one place:

Why choose reusable nappies

  • Reusable nappies are made from breathable, soft natural fabrics that are absorbent and gentle on your baby’s skin. No nasties—just cloth bum love! Reusable nappies have evolved significantly, with modern designs making them simple to use, wash, and dry. You can find out more about the different types and how to use them on the Reusable Nappy Week website.

  • In the first 2.5 years of a baby’s life, they will need at least 4,000 nappy changes. If using disposables, these nappies will be sent to general waste, which comes at a cost to the environment.

But you don’t have to switch to reusable nappies full-time to make a difference. Every day you choose to reuse, you reduce waste and avoid consuming the equivalent of at least 17 plastic bags in single-use plastics!

  • Reusable nappies produce 25% less CO₂ than single-use disposable nappies. The environmental impact of production is over 90% lower for reusable nappies compared to disposables.

  • Families can save up to £1,000 over 2.5 years by using reusable nappies. Even greater savings can be made by using them for younger siblings.

And buying brand-new nappies isn’t the only option! Many families use second-hand reusable nappies, which are often passed on for free.

Getting started with reusable nappies

For parents considering making the switch, here are some steps to help you begin:

Educate yourself: Learn about the different types of reusable nappies, such as flat nappies, fitted nappies, and all-in-one designs. Understanding their features and benefits will help you choose the best option for your baby. The Reusable Nappy Week website has loads of advice - why not check it out?

Connect with local resources: Many communities have cloth nappy libraries and washable nappy laundry services, providing hands-on experience and support as you transition to reusables.

Washing and drying

"Reusable nappies are unhygienic and really hard to clean."

This isn’t true! Reusable nappies have come a long way in recent years, making them easy to clean and reuse. Check out the Reusable Nappy Week advice page for more information.
