Admissions to school
How the school admission process works for children with Education Health Care Plans (EHCPs) - including mainstream and specialist provision.
Some children and young people will need an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). This helps schools provide what they need and support them to achieve the best outcomes.
Many children with an EHCP can attend a mainstream primary or secondary school with carefully planned and personalised support.
Sometimes a child or young person will need more support. In these circumstances the best way of supporting them to achieve well may be through a placement at a more specialist provision.
In West Sussex more specialist provision is provided by:
- Specialist Inclusion Bases (SIBs) which are attached to mainstream schools
- special schools
This guidance is for families, schools, early years settings, colleges and voluntary sector organisations that support families and other professionals. It can help you understand the:
- provision made at West Sussex schools
- range and level of needs that they meet
- process to apply when your child has an EHCP
